Burqa ban in EU ... unfortunate, against liberty, against freedom.

It sounds like a step towards chinification / talibanization .. where what one can wear / say is controlled by the govt. EU is slipping towards selective liberty (which supports the Danish cartoonist but is against a women covering itself) ... but still, it is light years ahead of other parts of the world.

The idea of muslim countries opposing it does nt make much sense to me. After all, western women and men, when in arab countries, have to adhere to "some" dress code.

Almost agree with you.
Freedom to wear/not-wear something should completely rest with individual. However I am also concerned about terrorist-attacks.
If I am asked to decide on the burqa policy of India, I will insist on keeping the face uncovered because face is the most identifiable human feature. Now a days any post-terrorism-investigation is significantly helped due to presence of video cameras in public space. A face-covering-burqa will hinder a post-attack investigation.
If tomorrow a technology arrives which can read a unique signature of each human body by some non-intrusive method (say infra red scanning), I will relax my face-covering clause of burqa and let each citizen decide for herself/family what she wears.

Sambaran, there is absolutely NO REASON for women in India to wear a black niqab over the otherwise EXTREMELY MODEST INDIAN CLOTHING like sari or salwar kameez. Indian clothing itself is modest enough. Especially in a hot country like India - what is the point of wearing multiple layers of clothing.

It is very unhealthy.

Why would any woman in India wear burkha or niqab? Desi clothes are modest enough. More than modest enough!

@Desi,

Personally I agree that saree/salwar-kamiz is decent enough. However I will let the lady decide for herself what is modest/comfortable for her.
I agree more with the thoughts expressed here by one Anupama: http://amapuna.wordpress.com/2010/07/15/burkha-babe/

Nice post. I agree with you, though you put it in a round about way. I think it's a personal choice but theer should be atleast some decency in clothing, atleast in the Sub-Continent. decncy is defined according to the usual way of dressing in a place, which varies significantly in a given country and is realted to security. It si the level of accpetance in a society.
As far as the EU is concerned, it is hypocritical in many ways. I have myself seen many men just leaving seats if a Muslim women with traditional clothing and head coveerd sits to them, but they will not leave their seat if any Asian women in western clothing sits besides them. the message is' you are fine if you become like us, but we are not comfortable if you bring your culture and religion with you'...There are suc people on the increase in Europe and therefore, the Burqa ban. The reasons thay may give for this can be many but the basic one is,that they are simply uncomfortable with the growing presence of Islam in their surroundings
